Building of FAULHABER MICROMO LLC, Clearwater, FL

FAULHABER MICROMO LLC (Clearwater, FL)

With the founding of MICROMO in Cleveland, OH, Dr. Fritz Faulhaber Senior made the move to the North American market in 1961. Early in the 1990s, the company relocated to Clearwater, FL, its current location. Particular strengths there include adapting drive systems to the specific requirements of customers in the North American market to ensure that the highest demands for precision and reliability are met. The most important industries are medical technology, robotics and factory automation, optics and photonics as well as aerospace.

In the area of medical technology, drive systems and components satisfy the strict specifications of the FDA in addition to those of international standard ISO 13485. MICROMO was part of the international FAULHABER Group right from the start. Full integration into FAULHABER Drive Systems took place in 2019 and the company has operated since then as FAULHABER MICROMO.

For customers needing assistance with more than just component selection and assembly, FAULHABER's engineering services department is an excellent resource. With decades of DC motor experience and expertise, our design engineers can outline a number of ways for you to accomplish your design goals, to shorten development time and reduce failure rates during testing and manufacturing.

FAULHABER MICROMO's engineering team resources include:

  • FAULHABER MICROMO's 2,500 square foot test lab
  • Evaluation of life and performance troubleshooting of failure modes
  • Environmental - including nitrogen purge capabilities
  • Shock testing
  • Photographic documentation, data and cause definition for failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA)
  • Finite element modeling
  • DFMEA
  • PFMEA
  • Labview
  • ASICS (development in Germany)

Using sophisticated analysis techniques, we can optimize the design and manufacture of your product. FAULHABER's engineering design team leverages design failure mode and effects analysis (DFMEA) to help you build the best possible product, and process failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA) to ensure that you get your product to market as quickly as possible.

FAULHABER MICROMO routinely produces motor and gearhead assemblies for autoclavable hand pieces and implantable devices. With a 12,000 square foot, Class 100,000 capable cleanroom assembly area and our experienced staff, we are able to ensure that each drive system delivered is functional and ready for use. That makes us your ideal manufacturing partner.

Our ruggedized components are built to withstand a range of harsh conditions, e.g. wash-down environments, vacuum operation, and punishing applications such as down-hole drilling, industrial hygiene, geological monitoring, aerospace, and more.

For our experienced machinists using the right tools, it's quick and easy to modify motors and assemblies, whether it's adding mounting plates and brackets, pulleys and gears, or even lead screws. Further modifications are also possible.

Our skilled machinists can make a range of modifications, including:

  • CNC / drilling
  • Flanges / grinding
  • Materials measurement
  • Milling / gear cutting / laser welding
  • Polishing / threading
  • Turning / plating / coating / stamping / welding
  • Injection molding (through suppliers)
  • Modified motors

Equipment and Tools

FAULHABER MICROMO's 5,000 square foot machining center equipment includes:

  • Mori Seiki NTX1000SZM CNC twin-spindle, high-precision, integrated mill/turn center (for more complex part requirements and gear hobbing)
  • Mori Seiki CNC vertical milling machines
  • Mori Seiki DL20MC CNC twin-spindle lathe with milling capability
  • MicroVu CMM sensor measuring machine
  • RAM optical coordinate measuring machine

Testing might take place in the laboratory, but motors operate in the real world. To be effective, test programs need to be designed to deliver insight, not just numbers. We are able to perform a sophisticated range of tests to ensure our products meet your needs and your products perform as desired.

FAULHABER's 2,500 square foot test lab includes:

  • Vibration—including Vibration Research Corporation vibration testing controller
  • Materials—including Pace Technologies PICO 150 precision cutter and Penta5000 Grinder for metallographic studies
  • Keyence video microscope
  • Nikon SMZ-10 microscope
  • Jeol Neoscope scanning electron microscope
  • Senis AG magnetic field mapper
  • Magtrol Micro Dyne dynamometer (low-torque testing of small motors, range of 2ozin to 125lbin)
  • Test ovens capable of running from -73°C to 175°C (RH 10-90% from 10°C to 85°C)

Our test lab can characterize any of our motors, developing torque, speed, and power curves, or testing for parameters, such as back EMF. If you're trying to determine what motor/gearhead combination will give you the optimum balance of performance and life, we will produce efficiency curves for whatever gear motor set you choose.
